M&S under threat

Article in the Daily Wail today suggesting that M&S could be on a hit list of closures. To quote the paper:
(extracts)Stores which are vulnerable because the town centre is already in serious decline include Blackpool, Bolton, Boston, Hereford, Mansfield, Stoke and Sunderland.M&S has not yet named the stores set for closure, which means thousands of workers are waiting to know if their store will go.However, experts at the Local Data Company have compiled a list of areas that it thinks are vulnerable. This list is not from M&S and it does not mean the stores involved form part of the official closure programme.M&S said: ‘We are very disappointed that anyone would choose to speculate in this way. This list is not based on any M&S data and we have not published any locations. What we have done is outlined plans to improve our store estate over the next five years which include opening 200 new Food stores and selling Clothing and Home from 60 fewer stores.’
Doesn't give much confidence. I suppose when the Council and Balfour Beatty start digging up High Town in front of the store and close more roads into the city - it will be the final nail in their coffin.
Our Beautiful Cathedral

Remembrance Day Hereford Sunday 13th of November 2016

Was it me or was there more of us today?
Standing, watching, placing themselves in that position that matches their expectations.
Why are they here?
Memories of someone special, respect perhaps for a past love that drives and eternal flame between then and now.
What of this group reflection?
Well it is a moment,a quiet special moment, but a moment in the company of others and not in isolation.
Will it always be the same?
It will grow, evolve and flourish I'm sure. For as people we look to the future as well as the past.Although it is a secret, private and mindful conversation we think of our children, and we, the worry well, worry for sure. Our public parent face needs to show courage and positivity in front of our children but please be sure to mind your own well-being and share a conversation for this will mean that you are not alone in your own fears and concerns.
Reports of Body Found on Belmont Road

I received a report that a body of a man had been found near McDonalds on the Belmont Rd early this morning. Ambulance crews were at the scene but no further updates at this time. Police are not treating this incident as suspicious.

I would like to write a story about this but I can't.
Whether you want to preserve our little county to traditions of the past or bring it into the globalisation that has caused so much distress well fear now. If you don't do films or gaming I'm sorry but a synergy with Fight Club or perhaps Call of Duty.
All the key Captains are now in place...if you have a God well you'd better get in touch.
It's been an incredible 18 months in many ways. .....we have a real problem now.
Argos Opening at Sainsbury's Hereford

Argos are opening a click and collect in Sainsbury's Hereford.
Unfortunately this will be at the demise of their store in high town. Argos main store has been under threat of closure for some time now and the the store in Hereford I am informed will probably close next year.
Hopefully most of the staff will be offered jobs at Sainsbury's but this threatened closure is not good news for the city centre.

More road closures

Noticed a sign yesterday stating that Southbank Road off Aylestone Hill will be closed from Monday 14th November for one week. Any information on what is happening?
How Many Empty Shops In Hereford 2016?

Another year has passed since I last did this exercise. I was out in the city on New Years Day, this is the first opportunity I have had to upload all of my findings. (January 2015)lets see what has changed in the past year and see what the differences are from the original topic in December 2013 and from January 2015.
Corporate governance - who is running the ship?
There is a statutory requirement for a Section 151 Officer in every local authority - arguably the single most important post in the Council, with huge responsibility for corporate management, financial management, supporting the democratic process etc, etc.

Begging

Well a first today for GK. In the space of fifteen minutes I was approached three times for change. That combined with chugging in High town means that I'm left with a troubled mindset.
Now I have not had the best of years but I know that if I obliged everyone that entered my eye space I would be homeless & broke within the week.
My troubled mind accepts that this scenario is set to get worse as time moves forward and more and more people slip of the edge but it's the feeling of inadequacy that leaves a scar on this troubled soul.
20k cap for financial officer recruitment drive
Yet another financial target im predicting will never be met by the council. With the reputation of HC and the history of it's management they are going to need a van and some chlorophyll to get anyone decent into the post. Even with the rates of pay on offer.
A drone's view over the river today

Belmont Library
Herefordshire Council's proposal for the Belmont Library in Financial Year 2017-18, commencing
1 April 2017, is that the library reverts to opening hours of 22.5 per week, staffed by professional librarians and South Wye Community Association is not to receive any payment from them for renting this facility.
How SWCA is expected to meet the overheads of the Belmont Community Centre, when a large part of its facilities is occupied by a non-paying guest, consuming its resources, is literally the £10,000 question.
SWCA is a registered charity, constituted to undertake "good works" in the South Wye Area, but whether its remit extends to baling out Herefordshire Council, and gifting them a free ride in part of the Belmont Centre, may be stretching the Association's constitutional, best intentions a league too far.
So there is no misunderstanding, the trustees and volunteers of South Wye Community Association want to retain (and develop) the Belmont Library for the benefit of the wider local community. It currently has a footfall of 40,000 visitors per year, of all ages residing in the City, Belmont Rural Parish and most of the villages in the South of Herefordshire.
However, I recognise the unsubtle difference between symbiosis and parasitism, and there is no such thing as a free meal!.
The proposal is unacceptable. I maintain that the Association should not be required to voluntarily bleed itself to death financially, by Herefordshire Council, in order to support the latter's own inadequacy, and to establish a Belmont Community Library.
All is yet not lost.. SWCA, including the writer, will try hard to get alternative income to keep the library open, but the clock is ticking.
This is my opinion and not that of the other SWCA trustees.
Andy Myatt
Trustee & treasurer SWCA.
Planning Application No 162770F Stoney Street Madley

An application has been submitted for an electricity generating plant in Stoney Street Madley. On viewing the application it was generally felt that this was a small fry operation but the enormity of it is just hitting home to many me included. To get a better picture of it I suggest anybody interested should read the objections and in particular the one from John and Anne Harrison. HC have set a target determination date for this PA as Friday 28th October 2016. It is thought the block housing the generator will be bigger than Madley Parish Church with 10 chimneys at a height of 13 metres - now that will be a blot of the landscape!!
