Riverside railings need repairing as a matter of urgency

    Hereford Voice
    By Hereford Voice,

The riverside railings were severely damaged during the floods of early 2020 and again this year.

    IMG_1250.thumb.jpeg.3cb7a8a9031ca99f78a3f3077652a51a.jpeg

As you can see from these photographs the railings are clearly unsafe and look like they could fall into the river at anytime.

    IMG_1252.thumb.jpeg.895c586740aa99738345ed6ce1478bac.jpeg

    IMG_1254.thumb.jpeg.f5978a5280d8275e4ff58b6ead02e4c5.jpeg

The gap that has been exposed is clearly dangerous even though Herefordshire Council contractors have placed barriers across but this needs addressing as a matter of urgency and we will be pushing the Council for an answer this week on when the public can expect these railings to be repaired.

Mairead Lane, Head of Infrastructure Delivery, said:

    Quote

"Our challenge has been to safely reopen the B4224 at Fownhope as soon as possible. The work needed to repair and safely reopen the B4224 at Fownhope has been complex and substantial. The engineered solution, particularly to the retaining wall at the Stone Cottage site, has taken an incredible amount of work and we have needed to ensure we provide a long-term, reliable repair.

"We are pleased that works are now complete, but we appreciate that the length of time this has taken has been hugely frustrating. We are sorry that the works have taken longer than originally anticipated, and would like to thank local residents and motorists once again for their patience."

One Week To Go Before Knife Angel Arrives at Hereford Cathedral

    Knife Angel Hereford

    Who are we?

Alison Davies lost her son Mark to knife crime in December 2018 and together with Meryl Cain and a small group of friends wanted to raise awareness of the catastrophic impact violent crime has on individuals, families and communities. The team’s involvement with this project is carried out on a voluntary basis. The group are known as The Knife Angel Hereford Team.

    What is the Plan?

The Knife Angel is coming to Hereford on June 14 – July 12 2021 hosted by Hereford Cathedral. During the Knife Angel’s visit we will run a series of workshops and interactive events. It is envisaged that this initiative will continue after the Knife Angel leaves Hereford. The majority of host towns & cities to date have had a knife amnesty whilst the Angel is in situ. We will have a general weapons amnesty, with the approval of West Mercia Police. There is a “weapon surrender” secure bin which travels with the Angel.

    Events

    During the Knife Angel’s stay in Hereford, there will be;

    • Series of free public workshops and events at The Cathedral and venues in the City.
    • National Conference, engaging with professionals in related spheres. This will be an online, ticketed event.
    • Youth Conference, identifying young people’s needs and issues which they feel have a negative impact on them and their community.
    • Weapon amnesty in operation for the duration of the Angel’s visit, approved by West Mercia Police, a secure weapon surrender bin travels with The Angel.
    • Opening Ceremony and Closing Vigil.

    Funding

Knife Angel Hereford need to raise funds to cover the cost of workshops, conferences, promotional campaigns and literature, printing costs, lighting, plus 24-hour security and insurance for this valuable and unique statue.

    E-Scooters, legal or Illegal?

    Hereford Voice
    By Hereford Voice,

E-Scooters | We have been asked this question many times.

Why in some cities and towns across the UK these E-Scooters are completely legal to use and yet in other cities and according to the law, they are illegal to use in public areas.

We noticed these in Kettering earlier this week..

Revitalised Shell Store is open for business

    Hereford Voice
    By Hereford Voice,

Hereford’s flagship business incubation and innovation centre officially opened by Secretary of State

Robert Jenrick, Secretary of State Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), cut the ribbon today (4 June) on Hereford’s Shell Store, newly refurbished into a modern business incubation and innovation centre.

The Shell Store has a rich history, having been built in the First World War and used as an ordnance site during the Second World War. The project has developed commercial space within the existing building footprint (it is not a listed building), retaining much of the original factory including its steel roof structure.

The £7.3m refurbishment of the building has established more than 2,100 sq metres of employment space, with room for new and growing businesses to set up and expand alongside facilities for development and innovation.

The 25 business incubation units are forecast to generate around 128 new jobs by 2023, rising to more than 450 by 2031.

The building also provides access to modern, accessible business meeting and conference space, as well as an onsite café, providing facilities to encourage networking and collaboration. The building was designed with specialist input from other successful business incubation facilities across the country to build on best practice elsewhere.

The Marches Growth Hub, Hereford Enterprise Zone team, and Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce will be located on site providing businesses with access to advice and support services.

    Jen_1__002_.thumb.jpg.e8b245db77a2090f3c880240ef810d27.jpg
Robert Jenrick MP, Secretary of State for MHCLG, said:

    Quote

“If you think back a decade ago, this was a derelict brownfields site and behind me was an incredibly historic building but one that was in poor condition. What has been achieved here is phenomenal. Half of the site is now full of businesses, and that is creating well-paid, interesting jobs for local people and is attracting business into the wider region as well.

“We want to make sure we build back strongly from the pandemic, and this building will play a part in that because it provides really high quality space for businesses, conference spaces, and spaces for incubation of new businesses. I think the future is very bright for the Shell Store.”

Cllr David Hitchiner, Leader of Herefordshire Council, said:

    Quote

“The Shell Store is a unique and historic building, and it is fantastic to see it refurbished as a key part of the council’s economic aspirations for the county.

“The people of Herefordshire are extraordinarily entrepreneurial, and this has contributed to the County being home to a thriving tech industry. The Shell Store will support the growth of this key sector by providing space and facilities for innovative new and young enterprises to flourish, helping to create local jobs and build skills and expertise. It has been a difficult time for local business, so it is brilliant to see the opening of this exciting new hub of incubation and innovation, which we are confident will make a vital contribution to driving local growth and supporting the economic recovery of the county.”

    Jen_2__002__1.thumb.jpg.faf18b7f6de3813254fb6f46db99bb12.jpg
Andrew Manning Cox, Chair of the Hereford Enterprise Zone, said:

    Quote

“The Shell Store offers exactly the sort of high-quality start-up and grow-on space which Hereford needs to enable us to nurture the next generation of businesses.

“We were delighted to show the Secretary of State how we have brought new life back to this amazing building which will contribute to the continuing economic recovery post-pandemic in the county.

“New, innovative and growing enterprises will benefit from being part of Skylon Park’s thriving business community with support on-site provided by the Enterprise Zone team and the Marches Growth Hub.”

Mandy Thorn MBE, Chair of the Marches LEP, said:

    Quote

“The Shell Store is an excellent example of the LEP delivering on its promise to work with our partners to create the conditions for economic growth and sustainable job creation across the region.

“We have supported this project through a £2.4m loan from the Marches Investment Fund because it is vital for the long-term success of our economy that we work to encourage and nurture young businesses, help support innovation and provide a business ecosystem which fosters growth. We look forward to the Shell Store having a long and successful future.”

The project has been funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Herefordshire Council and a loan from the Marches LEP’s Marches Investment Fund.

For more information on The Shell Store, please visit the Skylon Park website.
