Litter Rubbish and Overflowing Bins in Hereford

This is how High Town Hereford looks and this is the scene that visitors and tourists will remember about our city...

 

'Stop The Drop' they say, how about we start our own campaign called 'Rid The Trash' to encourage the council to start emptying the bins more often throughout the day, particularly at the weekends.  

Where has the pride in our beautiful city gone? 

ENFORCEMENT

We have wonderful community groups all volunteering their own time to clean up our city, but rather than cleaning up AFTER people have dropped the litter maybe we should concentrate efforts more towards encouraging the council to start issuing fines and using the CCTV facilities in order to catch these people. We are also in favour of 'Naming and Shaming' people who drop rubbish and litter.

Perhaps the Councillors when they meet in their plush meeting room should incorporate a quick canter around town highlighting the grim areas. It is grim and vile and just does not encourage people to be tidy

The council should be emptying these bins regular, weekends included or even more because there will eventually be more people around. One collection at 4am is not enough.

Council don't empty bins victor,also the dirty bstrds who think its quite ok to throw rubbish around an already full bin need to as Colin says fned for dropping litter.

Daily this is the state of the city centre. Bins outside the Town Hall are the same. 'Half soaked Betty' empty once a day but do not pick up the overflow litter - that's left to the BID to do. As soon as you enter the Old Market it's a different world. Bins in place for regular recycling, staff who sweep and pick litter throughout the day, steam cleaning for gum and seagull droppings and cleaning out moss between the slabs!!

So why can't this be done in the city centre or Maylords (which is 'private' like the Old Market)... perhaps as a start those take always such as Gregg, McDonald's adopted a more robust social consciousness to keep the areas in front of their premises clear of litter.

However whatever happens it's down to the council to keep the city clean.  So absolutely no chance of their approach or pride in their city changing.

So campaign loudly - tell your councillor, post on social media, get the HT on board - make a noise - be a nuisance

I haven't got a problem with someone balancing litter on top of a full bin. Or, indeed, placing rubbish next to a full bin. I'm being realistic. At least they're trying! I've witnessed the unwashed student types from the Hereford 6th Form College just dropping their lunch detritus at their feet in Churchill Gardens as they can't be bothered to carry the empty bottle or packet 20 feet to the very visible bin nearby. 

I will add that those overflowing bins' pictured in High Town and Eign Gate indicate a Very Heavy Footfall. So how come all the shops have shut? Maybe analyse the bin contents'? And work out from that data what is selling? And then replicate that demand in a shop?

we do take it seriously and have held numerous meetings with the Herefordshire Council contract team and Balfour Beatty. We have now got BBLP to come in today and resolve - they have told us they had staff shortages over the last few days. You can also expect us to talk to the senior team as we can't have slippages like this again. It happened at Christmas too during a key trading period and especially in the current climate it is vital to look our best for shoppers. The BID do not have a team of street cleaners - businesses such as you fund that via your business rates. Our team provide additionality such as painting and cleaning grot spots, installing and maintaining hanging baskets, removing chewing gum etc. We have just installed (as an example) a planter in the underpass and painted Brewers Passage (between Commercial Street and Maylord). Having said all that, we will continue to challenge and champion Hereford's needs and do whatever we can to help.

I don't get into town that often but it seems to be on a slow decline hygiene wise and otherwise . It really must be an  up hill struggle for the independent traders trying to make it pay .

Oh dear, what a mess left by late evening Revellers around this excellent sports facility. The nearby litter bin was half empty. Is this sheer laziness or do they just want to show how ungrateful they are? Luckily a young chap arrived with the hockey team and found a black bin bag and cleared most of it up. Partially restoring my faith in young people again.

I would say City Council for the city and the County Council for the whole county.  The county also needs to be kept clean but it also lies with the schools and perhaps nursery schools to encourage the children to pick up their sweet wrappers not just chuck them down. If they are taught at an early age they might just remember when they are a bit older to pick the litter up and to encourage their mates to do the same.

I'm pretty sure the public in general have the biggest responsibility.
