Nothing short of blatant electioneering about a non-issue. Some very questionable stories running in the HT over the last couple of days, all arguably trying to promote or discredit certain candidates.

I'm sure there won't be many tears being shed in the Palace of Westminster this morning over the timely demise of the egregious Gavin (Private Pike) Williamson. His departure should certainly puncture the Tories' balloon of invincible self-confidence on polling day. Let's hope the Indie pact holds together in all wards.

Unlike every other Council in the Country, Herefordshire are content not to bother start counting votes until 9am this morning;

Due to the number of contested district and parish elections we will be counting everything on Friday 3 May 2019 from 9am until finished. We will begin with counting the votes for the district elections in the morning, and follow with the parishes towards the afternoon.

Due to the number ... same as the last time and the time before that, surely?

Newton farm ward result 2nd May 2019

Independent Bernard Hunt wins Newton Farm with just 171 votes. The turn out was a tiny 18.6% in the Hereford seat.

Other candidates included Jacqueline Carwardine (Lib Dem 147)

Labour's Margy Whalley (101)

Glenda Powell (Democrats & Veterans Party 92)

Jeremy Chapman (Conservative 43).

In this ward 81.4% didn't, couldn't, wouldn't vote shows the state of local politics in Hereford/Herefordshire.

Nothing to shout about. I'm sure the likes of Mr Bramer and Mr Price etc. will all now be inter-elected to some brand new appointed position. Folk like them don't go quietly!

Cllr Price will not be missed nobody like him, just thought Cllr Bremer was also mayor of Ross. the mood at the count you could cut with a knife, Cllr Chappell face was a picture he was so confident he was going to win. There has been a lot of complaints sent to the election officers about many Cllrs, some of the Cllrs that have been elected could be disqualified from their wards within a few weeks, its in the hands of the police, from Worcester. so I have been told.

Make your vote count is pretty difficult when there is only one name on the ballot paper.

From The Slog today:

In an astonishing drift towards Soviet democracy, 300 council seats in England have been guaranteed for one party or individual before a single ballot has been cast, weeks before the May 2nd polling day.

The closed shop of shoo-in candidates affects around 850,000 voters across Britain. 150 councillors will win their seats without a single vote being cast. In these wards the candidates are running uncontested meaning these candidates ‘win’ their seats automatically. And Parties or independent candidates have also been guaranteed an additional 152 seats, as multi-member wards go ‘under-contested’ – i.e. where a lack of competition means that at least 1 seat in the ward is guaranteed for a particular party or independent candidate.

The scandal of 21st century Rotten Boroughs has come to light thanks to painstaking research carried out by the Electoral Reform Society (ERS). And the most telling statistic is this one:

While the Conservative Party will get 137 of these undercontested seats, Labour will get just 2 (two)

This is because the Labour Party accepts that, in many Wards, FPTP (first past the post) leaves them with no chance of winning. Yet they appear not to be worried about giving their supporters zero choice at local level. In fact, from the Leader downwards, they oppose any move away from FPTP. How curious that a Party so often using “democracy” as its watchword should be so unconcerned about a lack of it.

Make your vote count is pretty difficult when there is only one name on the ballot paper.

I'm very happy with FPTP. You get a most popular winner in an area. We had a vote on this recently. We decided to retain FPTP.

For the benefit of Newton Farm Residents does Mr Bernard Hunt have a point of contact ie address, telephone or email where they may bring matters to his attention. I understand he has business premises in Whitecross, however I doubt whether people may want to go there and find he is out or not available.

Megilleland. Bernard Hunt lives in Bromyard there was a landline and mobile number on his leaflet (or should I say Phil Edwards) because it was all about him, nothing about Bernard Hunt. He disappeared from the count after 30 minutes because he had calls to make in regard to his business, good start for the people of Newton Farm, his business comes before his councillor work, time will tell.

Well if Bernard Hunt, who is totally useless, can get elected it really does not say much about the voters in Newton Farm and/or the other candidates. But of course if you believe the conspiracy theorists he and others may be disqualified soon.
