I remember in 1997 when I started up the Newton Farm Community Association we held all our monthtly meetings there for the residents, also our community fun days with the police doing the cooking hot dogs, beefburgers etc. I attended church every Sunday and my last memory before it was closed was that I was confirmed there by the Bishop of Hereford who agreed to conduct the ceremony on that day because it was closing..... A lot of happy memories I will never forget....

Very sad, it was built in the 60/70s, the people of Newton Farm paid a £1 a brick for it to be built. It was used by everyone a real community asset as was the Vortex, now they have both gone for housing, thats what they call progress I don't think!!!

Old Market Hereford
Glenda Powell replied to Colin James's topic in Edgar Street Grid and Courtyard Theatre
Yourherefordshire- I did not take up the other invitation to go and look around the site, and when it does open there is a possibility I will not be in Hereford on the day, therefore I will not attend. Alex- if you read the appropriate post about not being able to eat hot food after 1.30am and look on page 6 and my comment I said I think that all food establishments should close at the same time, I did not say it should be 1.30am. And just for the record there are 11 councillors on regulatory committee now they went with the majority vote, there were two that did not agree and I was one of them. Look at HT website this week there is a manager actually taking responsibility for his establishment and the people who go there, let hope all managers follow his lead! ragwert- As I have told you before we are all entitled to our opinions, just one question-did you ever go to Newport and see the devestation the Kingsway Centre caused the rest of the high street, all the units were never FULL and after a while it CLOSED! what we have in Hereford is exactly the same only difference they called them both by a different name. Shopping Malls or centres went out of fashion 20 years ago!!!- 185 replies

Thats probably because the church used to supply them with a meal, I don't think that happens now, but old habits die hard maybe they think if they stay there long enough the church will start serving meals again.

Old Market Hereford
Glenda Powell replied to Colin James's topic in Edgar Street Grid and Courtyard Theatre
Waitrose is the most expensive supermarket on any high street, but they will still be in competition with all the others. As I said before I will probably be invited to the opening as a councillor, but that will be the first and last time I will go there, I do my food shopping in Marks and Spencers, and Debenhams has other outlets taking up space in their stores it is not exclusively their merchandise they sell, on saying that none of these well named stores are exclusive to their brands, it was said in the press recently their profit margins are down for the second year running, I can see this store and possibly a few more closing within six months and where will we be then a monstrocity of a shopping centre that will have half their shops gone! I hope I am wrong but I remember the Kingsway Shopping Centre in Newport Wales, their units were half empty within six months but it did to Newport town centre as this one has done to High Town KILLED IT!!! and it's not even open yet!- 185 replies

Noteworthy Hereford and Herefordshire personalities

When we are all famous for something and recognised for it, maybe we will have a plaque with our name on it. Another well known Hereford sports person was John Tarrant, there is a street named after him in Newton Farm -

Going back to the subject of this post, Sara Siddons lived in church street there is a plaque to her. -
All of the flats around the Oval are coming down, it is a 6 year programme, but the shops will not go they will be modernised as well as the flats above to a high standard. There are 2,3,and 4 bedroom houses being built with 14 bungalows that I asked to be included in the re-development, as well as two blocks of flats, one to replace the ones being demolished in Beattie Ave the other in Goodrich Grove. There will be eleven houses built on the church site they are all to buy. I will get up to date information next week at the housing management group that I attend to help the tenants with their move etc.

Metal Garden Gates Stolen In Herefordshire
Glenda Powell replied to Colin James's topic in Police & Crime
it is old news these gates were stolen between 22nd-31st January, in Whitecross Rd,Edgar Street,Barrscourt Rd, Grandstand Rd and Lugwardine. -
I own one of the 2 storey flats off Kilvert Road they are 66 years old, so they are older than all of them including the prefabs, although they are built with re-enforced concrete like the prefabs they were built to last. There are also 3 bedroom prefabs in Putson but they have all been bricked with the exception of a few facing Holme Lacy road who still look the same because they were bought many years ago before they were modernised.
-
Mike, welcome to Hereford Voice. 1. I will check on the landfil situation, having a meeting with Herefordshire Housing on 27th so will ask then. 2. The prefabs were built after WW2, so they are approx 60 years old. There is no plans for them at the moment, they were rendered around 12 years ago and new roofs, kitchen and bathrooms were installed. These days the majority of them have elderly and /or disabled people living in them, some have been adapted or built on at the rear to accomodate the tenants needs, again this is a question I can ask on 27th Feb. There will be another modern 3 storey block of flats built on the site of the one's coming down and another to match on the other side of the road. May I suggest you go into Herefordshire Housing website and click onto the page for the regeneration of the Oval, you will see the plans and design of all properties to be built there.
-
Gareth, the flats in Beattie Ave were always coming down first, before any other flats come down the houses on the vortex site will be built to enable families to move in. As I advised you I have a meeting with HHL Oval Management Team on 27th February we should have up to date information about the redevelopment at that meeting, I will then put it on my website. welcome to Hereford Voice, because I was born in South Wye I am begining to write a book on its history, and the fact that Newton Farm estate was named after the Powell farm of the same name. The farm it self was built in 1750, and stood on what is now named Millards Close,Barons mead and the Vortex site, if you would like to get in touch with me 01432 360456, or click on the South Wye heading of my website you will see the history of South Wye page, all the stories so far are there, you cannot copy it as I have the copy right on the book and website.

Don't be had, they say you can claim all these benefits then when you try the answer is sorry you don't qualify. Because I get a small allowance for being a councillor that is added to my state pension so I pay income tax on it all which also stops me getting council tax allowance. A couple of years ago I had an accident which took me nearly a year to recover all I had was my pension to live on even then I could not claim any benefits. But as said before on this post if you have children, not working, or looking for work you get it all.It doesn't encourage people to look for work because it has been said to me I can get more money on benefits so why should I look for work.

Belmont Ward, Hereford City Council Election
Glenda Powell replied to megilleland's topic in Belmont
There are 4 candidates and only received 2 candidates leaflets, so unless they hurry up I will chose between the candidates who I have received leaflets for! -
I couldn't agree more with your comments, the lower paid staff who like everyone else finding it hard to make ends meet are the ones who are being sacked only to find a few weeks later others further up the pay scale are getting rises in their salary. I am on public record as asking for a reduction in high paid officers and cabinet member salary because of the mess this council is in, I ask this again at last Friday council meeting I got boo by the administration councillors, this was because I said the director of health and wellbeing (social care) should take a salary cut to help pay for her two new interim staff £925 a day wage. I also said last year that I was willing to take a 10% cut in my councillors allowance like the other two councillors did providing the officers and cabinet members did the same that never happened!!! There are cabinet members and high paid directors who has no idea what their job entails they just "muddle" through or ask for other high paid people to help, and one cabinet member who was ask to step down from their position was moved to a high position in the council and salary to match, and people wonder why I get annoyed!

Correction! the two amendments that was put forward by the Independents and was accepted was for re-instating of the budget for home to school transport and re-instate the budget for the arts. The third amendment put forward by IOC was not accepted because it was to take away the money for the link road between A49/A465 (Ross Rd and Belmont road) to be built. As the A465 is in my ward and the congestion we face every day on this road I would not accept their amendment and neither did anyone else, the only councillors who voted for the amendment was IOC. As I have said elsewhere in this post I voted against the budget for the following reasons which I stated at the meeting: 1. I could not accept the payment of £925 per day for two interim staff to help the director of adult social care when they have drastically cut back the budget for our elderly, disabled and children services. 2. continual borrowing of money to pay for the "road to nowhere" as I named it last year and many other things. 3. The destruction of our town centre and the businesses there in favour of the new shopping development when it was agreed in the begining that there was to be a link between high town and the new old market development. I voted against the budget although an alternative was not put forward because personally I feel to abstain is "sitting on the fence". It was a named vote so no doubt this will be reported in the HT next week and possibly my reasons why I could not vote for the budget.

Frank, slightly out of context here, no one mention murder or the fact you should not be out after 7pm, that will include me then because my city council meetings are all at night. Going back to the post in hand. I do not agree with the fact that some outlets are allowed to stay open because they are serving cold food, all food outlets should close at the same time in my opinion, but quite lately it is apparent on here my opinion does't count only everyone elses, but we are all entitled to our opinions are we not!

Roger, I have not shifted as you say the blame to the whole committee, it is solely not my decision, it is the whole committee decision having listened to the officers who give us advice on the legal situation and the police, the whole committee gives their own opinion based on information in front of us, the chairman has the casting vote. No councillors are popular on that committee with the general public because sometimes they do not like our decisions, but we are guided by our legal advisor, so it is a joint decision on the evidence that is before us. The committee responsibility is vast it is not just with licensing. Denise, thank you for your support it is appreciated, I have a reputation of speaking the truth some people do not like that, but at least you know where you stand with me, please or offend it is not personal. for clarification although you said it doesn't matter to you I am an Independent councillor and have been for nearly 11 years. Being a councillor is not a 9-5 job I make myself available 12 hours a day because I am on public record as saying if my constituents can get up off the A... to vote for me every 4 years then I give them 100% of my time, unfortunately not all councillors do that! and I can assure you my constituents keep me on my toes, but they appreciate the time I give them.

Well I expected that reaction from what I have said, so you didn't disappoint me! I am not penalising anyone or any fast food outlet, it is not MY SINGLE decision. Read my post again I have said the minority spoils it for the rest, that said, the responsibility lies with the person and his/her behaviour, and how do you think the police find out about trouble in the food outlets its because most of the time the police are called by the propriator. So don't shoot the messanger (ME) because you don't like what I have said!!!

Yes I did go out as every councillor did on Regulatory Committee last year in their own area, leominster ,Ledbury, Bromyard , Ross including Hereford city. and yes I had my own independent views on the matter which I have stated not here but where it mattered at the committee, but I also commented on the night the problem is with the pubs and nightclubs serving people who has either come into the establishment already half way intoxicated or gets to the position of causing fights etc , but in my own opinion that is down to the manager of these establishments serving drinks when they shouln't, but the people themselves are also responsible how much they drink and their behaviour. I witnessed fights, walking out into the road nearly causing accidents and in between all this taxis parked everywhere causing a problem as well. These are the same people who go into hot food outlets and cause trouble, as well as urinating in the street being sick etc. Unfortunately as always the case a few spoil it for everyone else. Thats said, I can understand why the police want the streets cleared asap. They took their life in their hands on many occasions during the weekend I went out with them!!!

How Many Empty Shops In Hereford 2014?
Glenda Powell replied to Colin James's topic in Hereford City
No one moves without an insentive, so do I take it you are all in favour of the killing of High Town for the OLM site?
