From Hereford Times News today: Gas leak in Widemarsh Street, Hereford - road closed PART of Widemarash Street in Hereford is currently closed while emergency excavation work is carried out following a gas leak. The affected area is between Blackfriars Street and Newtown Road where the gas main is 2.5 metres below the ground. Transco - which is carrying out the work - said every effort will be made to complete it by Friday but this cannot be guaranteed at present.

  7. Council heads are not the only ones who know they are worth more than the rest of us. Today in The Guardian, the High Pay Centre revealed that the bosses of Britain's 100 biggest listed companies are earning on average 143 times more than their staff, according to data that exposes the growing imbalance between how the nation's workforce and its business leaders are rewarded. "When bosses make hundreds of times as much money as the rest of the workforce, it creates a deep sense of unfairness," said High Pay Centre director, Deborah Hargreaves. "Britain's executives haven't got so much better over the past two decades. The only reason why their pay has increased so rapidly compared to their employees is that they are able to get away with it." Not only are these overpaid chumps taking home ridiculous salaries because the general public throw money at them through the services we buy off them, but they continue to strip away the asset base of this country but sending most of their cash wealth offshore. Looking closer at home a year ago, The Worcestershire Partnership with Herefordshire Council was looking at setting up a JPV (Joint Vehicle Partnership). "A visit by Bruce Mann is proposed for 23rd April 2014 to review progress on our project and be available to discuss any issues with senior executives. An agenda is being prepared and availability will be clarified." Here they say: 24. The formation of the JPV also offers the opportunity to transform the way that property services are delivered in the public sector. The OBC anticipates a significant downsizing of the total resources needed to deliver the service by bringing the joint skills and experience of the teams together. Something in the region of a 20% reduction in staffing levels is expected in the first year of operation. 25. It should also be acknowledged that this will mean there will be a need to recruit new skills in order to ensure the JPV Company is both structured and run on much more commercial lines. For example, the OBC anticipates the recruitment of the new company's senior management team from an open recruitment process within the industry. 26. The OBC also anticipates that the operating company will seek to add a number of Non-Executive Directors from outside of the partnership (and likely to be from the private sector) to ensure that a wide range of skills are brought to bear on driving the new approach. Move forward to today and we see Bruce Mann, executive director, Government Property Unit (GPU) at the Cabinet Office, has been appointed as chairman of a new Shadow Shareholder Group designed to oversee the creation of a groundbreaking regional property management unit in the West Midlands. A unique Joint Property Vehicle (JPV) is currently being explored by a number of public sector partners in the West Midlands which – if approved – could see the creation of a single property unit tasked with overseeing the management of public sector estates in the region. This approach would be the first of its kind anywhere in the UK and would help protect front-line services while delivering property-related revenue savings of around £110.7m between 2015 and 2025. The partners currently exploring the potential of a JPV include Herefordshire Council, Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, Redditch Borough Council, Warwickshire Police, West Mercia Police, Worcestershire County Council, and Worcester City Council. I wonder how much Mr Mannn will get to strip away our assets and I wonder where the money saved will be spent?

  11. I am sure that the amount of funding these parties have will determine how much literature we will be getting through the letterbox nearer May next year. I have always said that we have a pendulum style of politics (something that tends to move from one position, condition, etc., to the opposite extreme and then back again) - the country and you just get ripped off either way.
  12. I find Jesse Norman quite approachable, but unfortunately I just cannot stand the present conservative party and its appalling policies affecting the way we live our lives.   13. The council gets the ground, the football is moved somewhere else. Who cares about the fans and history - it's all going to happen again with the Working Boys Home in Bath Street shortly? The development continues apace and all there will be seen in a few years time is another monument of corporate lust, probably a drive-in McDonalds at the end of the link road.

  17. I get mine sent to me regularly, at least every two months, by e-mail. The Safer Neighbourhoods section on West Mercia Police website shows the areas with information on priorities and events.
  18. Pity they didn't cut it flush with the concrete slab and treat the stump with root killer, but I imagine the form filling to use the chemical would be horrendous. Also a quick brush of the slab and wall to sweep the mess left behind.

  20. And if you turn up at a police station that is open will you be turned away and told to use the intercom service outside?
  21. Years ago there would have been a duty sergeant at each police station from where the local bobbies would go out from each day. So are there any no other persons in these offices who could take front of house enquiries. If there are not then I can see these building assets going to be sold off pretty quick if the £30 million cuts are necessary. Don't you get a feeling that all these cuts that are being made are being diverted to other causes we are not really aware of.

  23. An amazing research into this old property and its previous occupiers. Working for Royal Mail I used to deliver mail to this property on the Winforton delivery, after taking the mail from Hereford to Kington sorting office first thing in the morning. I always wondered that if I had to knock the front door the roof would collapse! I also remember the cats sunning themselves in the front window. This picture was taken on 10th March 2007. I would pass Mr Penny on his bicycle, immaculately turned out with cycle clips pedaling towards Eardisley, where he would visit the Strand, opposite the Tram Inn, for a drink and watch the horse racing. He even had battery lights on his bike and must have cycled back home sometimes in the dark. His death was very tragic for someone still so active for his age. When delivering his mail I would pull across the main road to outside his cottage and then return to the opposite of the road. This was always a tricky manoeuvre, as the cottage was on a blind bend with fast traffic travelling towards the road junction with the A4111. There is a reference to The Wharf House in the Parish of Eardisley. There are two properties called The Wharf/Cottage and Wharf Bungalow next to the tennis courts in Eardisley. I believe they would have been named in connection with an early narrow gauge horse tramway, that linked limestone quarries at Burlinjob in Radnorshire to Eardisley in Herefordshire.
