Asset transfer and stripping for the public good?

Hereford Times 10:40am Tuesday 4th March 2014 in News By Bill Tanner Although a University is a good idea, to use buidings all over the place, just because the council wants to get rid of them isn't the best solution. A Herefordshire University would need to have a distinctive identity and something more creative could be built to highlight this beacon of further education. After all we don't want student tutorials in public conveniences just because the council can't afford to keep them open! Asset transfer appears to be the flavour of the month - at the moment. -

Asset transfer and stripping for the public good?

I came across this on the council's development blog: Property that the council owns The council has created a database of property the council owns which they have made searchable in a number of ways. They have also made sure you can see the results on a map following a search under the headings: Search by property name Search by parish Search by ward Search by classification Why would you want to see our property? There are several reasons but probably the most important one is that the council is a public body and that you, as citizens, have a right to understand what assets we hold and how we use them. Yes, but not a right to know the decisions behind selling off assets below market value. -
Nigel Farage reprimanded for criticising Baroness Ashton European Parliament, Strasbourg, France, 25.11.2009 Five years ago Nigel Farage complained about her appointment and everything he said made the European Parliament squirm. However Baroness Ashton has gone on to do very nicely and will continue to do so when she stands down at the the end of this year.

Speaking of dog mess I notice that Hereford Heckler is highlighting further crap here: And now the Council want to demolish their offices in Bath Street. Hereford Civic Society committee member Gareth Davies will be on BBC Hereford and Worcester on the Breakfast Show on Monday 3rd March. He has given a passionate interview about the former Bath Street Working Boys’ Home - due to be demolished to make way for a new Fire station. HCS has taken a stance on this. Together with the historic connections this prominent site is not the place for a Fire Station. We are in discussion with the Council which has agreed to consider HCS proposals. Note HCS next meeting: Architects and Craftsmen 1700 - 1930 a survey of those responsible for creating Hereford, by David Whitehead, Historian. Thursday 20th March, Kindle Centre, 7 pm for a 7.30 pm start. 230 years to create Hereford and a few council terms to destroy it.

Robert Francis Kilvert (3 December 1840 – 23 September 1879), always known as Francis, or Frank, was an English clergyman remembered for his diaries reflecting rural life in the 1870s, which were published over fifty years after his death. A John Betjeman BBC television documentary on Kilvert, called Vicar of this Parish, was shown in 1976. This led to Kilvert's Diary being dramatised (18 x 15 minute episodes)[2] on British television between 1977 and 1978, with Timothy Davies in the title role. All episodes survive. -

Sure does. Here is another from the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership Draft Strategic Economic Plan. So people in Shropshire won't be coming down here to Hereford for their shopping experience when they can get it locally. -

Just quickly filled in this "On Street Parking survey". Seemed a bit inadequate considering the importance of this issue. -

Opinions sought about on-street parking in Hereford 26 February 2014 Herefordshire Council News item Shoppers and traders have the opportunity to give their opinion about parking in Hereford city centre as the council commences its review of on-street parking. The Council will be considering a range of options including charging for on street parking, to manage traffic flow into and around the city centre, to reduce congestion and create a safer and more pleasurable place for shoppers within the enhanced retail environment. It will commence consultation with shoppers, traders residents and other interested groups this week and will carry out further consultation on detailed proposals in the summer. The review will aim to support current schemes in the historic core include street de-cluttering through rationalising existing signage, 20mph zones and more cycling facilities. Creating an appropriate parking strategy supports this as the council looks to enable access to the city centre for all whilst seeking to deter any unnecessary car trips where public transport or active transport could provide an alternative. Councillor Price, Cabinet Member Infrastructure said “The review will look at the number of street parking spaces and where they are, how current restrictions control parking and whether they are appropriate. We need to understand how and what changes might better control traffic flow into and around the city centre to reduce congestion whilst supporting businesses and residents. Creating a better environment with less circulating cars and more facilities for cycling, walking and public transport use will be the basis of the next Local Transport Plan (LTP) that is due to commence in 2015. The LTP will include plans which aim to support economic growth, reduce carbon emissions and make journeys easier for people.†The closing date for submission of the questionnaire is 17 March 2014. To complete the online questionnaire please go to www.herefordshire.gov.uk/ParkingReview or call 01432 349530 to request a paper version. -

Talking of dictatorships: Local government cabinet system Responsible department: Department for Communities and Local Government "In the year 2000, Tony Blair's government introduced a new Local Government Act. This Act had the effect of focusing far too much power in the hands of a Council Leader and a few of his hand picked colleagues. The practice, know as the Cabinet System, denies the vast majority of elected Councillors on Borough and County Councils to be involved in what are often crucial decisions. The Cabinet System, which is often lucrative for members of the Cabinet, should be disbanded, and British Councils should revert to the democratic system that was in place prior to the year 2000. This would enable all Councillors to participate in the best interest of their constituents". Please sign this UKIP petition to acknowledge your agreement.

BBC H&W News today: How are the council going to find the money for this? This neglect of our highways has being going on for years with the contract money being siphoned off for private organisations and their shareholders.

As we head towards the next council and general elections in May 2015, the current administartive bodies are rushing to get the cash into their tills. Having passed the majority of public services over to their private friends the assets of these public bodies entrusted to us are now in the forefront of a fire sale to get the last coppers from us. The latest deals involve the relocation of the fire station and the Queenswood Country Park and Bodenham Lake nature reserve
