Concerns for Hereford Motorcycle Legend Bob Gallier
Steve Major replied to Hereford Voice's topic in Open Forum
Bob is a good guy, hope he is found safe -
Chris, the bus service in Hereford is S H I T at best! Twice last week buses failed to turn up at all in Hunderton. There is no direct bus from Hunderton to the train station or Holmer, you have to change buses and pay again at least I could of used a tram which is not a solution to the whole of Hereford but would help dramatically, many people are in favour of utilising the great western way by adding a tram service, but as this is not one of your ideas I understand why it does not have your backing..

I agree, the tram idea is one of the best for Hereford in the absence of a bypass. I believe the idea of costs where relatively low and just a few sponsors would cover it. The bridge over the river used to carry coal trains but I agree it would need updating for sure. The tram could run from the top of NF all the way into the train station and they could even open the old tracks which ran to the top of Holmer and going the other way down into Rotherwas.

I don't agree, have a wonder down Castle St or Bridge St now and its usually pretty dead, I have no real problem paying a £1 to park but half hour is no good to anyone. -

This has never been a popular project in the absence of a bypass and I am not convinced this is better for Hereford but we will see -

Just to address your comments booby47 about children on pedal cycles; Children under the age of 10 are below the age of criminal responsibility. Therefore, they cannot be prosecuted for a criminal offence. They cannot be issued with a fixed penalty notice either as they cannot be given to anyone under the age of 16. This means that, whilst police officers can theoretically stop young children (aged under 10) who are cycling on pavements, they have no powers to arrest, fine or even caution them. This is sensible, as young children should not be expected to cycle on the road.

So sod everyone else on the footpath then. Shared space is one thing but footpaths that are barely wide enough for pedestrians is a big no no for cyclists, the law is the law how long before people on mopeds have the same outlook?
-
Just to address the last part of your previous comment above. You could argue that there are also a lot of fair, respectful, thoughtful and downright scared people in cars that feel bullied by much bigger vehicles, such as lorries, buses, vans and even larger cars. My wife is terrified of driving on busy roads and dual carriageways in her little car and will only drive on a motorway if absolutely essential. Her view, which I share is that the police and authorities need to tighten up on ALL ROAD USERS and make it a safer place for all. If you were seen be a copper riding on a footpath then would pull over and instruct you to get off your bike and walk, these days they just drive past, which in my view is encouraging even more! This was never really an issue growing up, yes granted there are more vehicles on the roads these days but equally there are also more cyclists, the answer is NOT riding cycles on footpaths, that is just down right selfish with absolutely no consideration for pedestrians or pets. I think what I find annoying about cyclists is many claim to be victims and will wear head cams to catch out the odd motorists when in reality they are often not much better, it is all about me me me.
-
While I understand concerns, it was never really an issue for us growing up, I can understand cyclists feeling safer riding on footpaths but try asking the same question to the pedestrians about cyclists on footpaths! It is against the law to ride cycle on many footpaths simple! I would feel a lot safer driving my car along the hard shoulder of the motorway rather than have to be in the same lane as a huge lorry or bus in my little car but I can't can I. I think ALL cyclists should have a test similar to that of motorcycles and give people some education. The council offer free courses which Ubique posted above.

I am out of the country for 2 weeks on holiday or I would have come down to help out. Well done to all involved, giving up their spare time to clean up this area.

Syrian refugee I see, cough cough, where are the lefties on this one?

OMG, what a complete knob!! I am now starting to understand why the statistics show so many cyclists getting injured or killed by other motorists.

Another terrorist attack in Europe today, this time in Barcelona. Some nutter in a van mowing down innocent people and tourists on Las Ramblers in the heart of the city. Reports are that at least 13 people have died and another 50 or more are injured. Just have to wait now for the mandatory flag colours to appear on the Eiffel Tower and other major landmarks.

Hello Frank, good question and sorry to hear of your misfortune today, glad that you are ok. It is illegal to ride a bike on a footpath in the UK, see rule 64 here
