We have recently returned from Calella, which is a very busy and popular town on the Costa Brava.

While travelling around we could not help but notice that in most of the very busy streets particularly around the commercial centres that there were very few disabled parking bays (unlike the UK where there are far too many in my opinion) and where there were disabled bays they seemed to be always empty. It was the same in Barcelona. So am I to believe that there are less genuine disabled people in Spain or are there just more scammers here in the UK?

Good observation my friend. It is the same in Portugal and France. I would tend to agree with the latter part of your comments and suggest that our benefit system is abused far too much. Hereford has to have more disabled parking bays than any other city of it's size.

That is a challenge that I cannot see any politician wanting to take on.

A complete overhaul of disability benefits?  That, right there, is a lost election!

However needed it may be.

Plus...  The population of the UK is roughly 20 million higher than that of Spain.  and the UK is less than half the size.

So, there are likely to be more people that are genuinely disabled in the UK compared to Spain.

You are not wrong with this statement and this is one of the issues, as soon as the government announce any type of benefit overhaul they start loosing votes and that is because there are more and more people on benefits, which also includes more and more fraudulent claimants unfortunately and that is why my taxes are constantly rising!

They have already had a overhaul of the Benefit system that's why the Tories are called the nasty Tories. They are causing hardship to a lot of people why do you think food banks are open now. They needed to be overhauled but not the way they have gone about it.Try living on £70.00 a week for 3 people. And for Disabled parking spaces there is not enough and it makes me angry when people who are not disabled park in them.

I do not agree that there are not enough disabled parking spaces, tbh I have never seen so many, nearly half the parking bays in Broad St are for disabled people. Regarding the benefits overhaul, I do not think it is fair to blame the Tories outright, they have find a balance, a lot of blame should be laid at the door of the not so genuine claimants and believe me there are thousands! You should target your frustrations at them and not the governments who are battling the colossal cost, which could be used in the NHS or schools etc

l Have no issue paying taxing and supporting real genuine people who need help but it does make my blood boil when I am paying extortionate taxes for lazy sods and people who are making a mockery of the system and what it was designed for. Personally, I think they should do major checks on ALL claimants every 2 years, genuine people should welcome this and not have an issue with it.

In Wales they have just passed a law which will allow people with temporary injuries or illness which restricts mobility to be eligible for a blue disability parking badge for 12 months . This will help those recovering from or waiting for treatment . It will include severe leg injuries , stroke , head injuries ,spinal trauma and cancers effecting movement etc.

Appears to be a very good decision which should , to my mind be made available in England - but being aware of how long it took England to follow Wales relating to plastic carrier bags it won't happen in England overnight.

My ex wife worked while married to me.

She left me for another and has never worked since. She married him and he is her carer.

She is epileptic, occasionally having a fit,  which is enough to get her off work.

My kids tell me they have everything, playstation/x box, Sky TV, nice car etc.

To be honest it suits her and her carer not to work, and helps the government because these two are not on the unemployment register!

I find this quite shameful, especially when you see real disabled people with quite severe disabilities working in places like Tesco. It just makes a mockery of the system.
